Even with the best dental care, it’s possible to lose a tooth from trauma. Whether you’ve lost a tooth from an accident or decay, your NYC cosmetic dentists will review your options and help you decide what to do about filling in the space left by your lost tooth or teeth. In most instances, the options boil down to two choices: a dental bridge or a dental implant.

With a dental bridge, your missing tooth is replaced by a 3-tooth structure that, essentially, uses the strength of the teeth on either side of the missing tooth to provide support. It “bridges the gap” created by one or more missing teeth.

The teeth on either side of the missing tooth are called “abutment” teeth. The enamel on these teeth is partially removed so that a crown can be put over them. You’ll have a temporary bridge while a lab creates the final one. It can take several visits to complete the process.

In a dental implantthe root is removed and replaced with an artificial root, called a post, made of titanium, that is screwed into the jaw. Over time, tissues in the jaw bone grow into the post, making it extremely secure.

Next, what’s called an “abutment” is inserted. It looks like a peg, and the crown is positioned over it.

How Long Do They Last?

Dental implants generally last a lifetime, while a bridge must be replaced every 10-15 years.

What’s the Cost Comparison?

Considering the patient must replace the bridge several times over the course of his or her lifetime, the cost comparison between the two options is actually very close.

As your Manhattan cosmetic dental practice, we hope you never need to replace your natural teeth. However, if the time comes, know that we’re prepared to help you make the best decision.
